The article, “Invisible Army” by Sarah Stillman, came out this month. It had been edited down significantly and Mike only got a passing mention. She felt that his part of the story needed some further attention and so got her editors to approve a full piece on him in her New Yorker blog. She still wasn’t given enough space to cover the whole thing and has strongly encouraged Mike to write a book about his time in Iraq.

Considering many who have met him and heard the tales have requested the same thing, I was very happy to see him take the suggestion of a professional writer to heart. Here’s hoping he gets the book completed. I believe it will be a compelling read. As you can see in the article, there is much to be told. I’m so glad these things are being forced into the light of day and that my husband was one of the few that, despite the risks to themselves, stood up for those who desperately needed it.

The article in the New Yorker paper magazine/online copy: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/06/06/110606fa_fact_stillman

To tell me that the world today is not way too focused on things.

The employee was “stepped on by hundreds of people” as other workers attempted to fight their way through the crowd, Fleming said.

A freaking greeter at Wal-Mart TRAMPLED TO DEATH. Two others shooting it out in front of a TOY STORE. Forget it people. Just – what the hell possessed these people? Certainly not one iota of intelligence nor compassion. And the most disgusting thing about it is – the people who killed this guy will most likely get away with it.

I have always felt this time of year was way too commercialized and…now…I can barely control my feeling of absolute loathing for the American populace.

Even over the weekend, the highest sustained winds we can expect are around 35mph with only about 2″ of rain expected. The gusts will hit, maybe, 45mph.

In other words, Ike is a complete non-issue for Austin.

For those who are having to head into/stay in the area that is going to be seriously impacted by Ike – we will keep you in our prayers and thoughts. Stay as safe as you possibly can.

I don’t care how you slice it.

There is no way in hell that a naked man could over power three – count them THREE – grown men. Not only that, but these men had pepper spray as well. I guarantee you – that spray on the privates or in the eyes – or both, for fuck’s sake – would have completely incapacitated the man.

This man had no deadly weapons on him of any sort other than his own body. Not even a place to conceal one, unless he planned to shit out a gun/knife. What call did these officers have to shoot?

This is not a case of excessive force…this is a case of homicide…pure and simple. These officers were not in fear of their life. At most, they were worried about black eyes, broken noses and ripped uniforms.

I should sure as hell hope they are on administrative leave and I hope to all that’s holy that they stand trial for murder. It sure as hell wasn’t manslaughter. The NAKED man was shot several times…that’s not unintentional act of homicide…that’s a freaking “let me kill this dude” act of homicide. And there is no way in hell they could even begin to justify emotional duress…this is part of their JOB…to be cool in emotionally hot situations.

And if we can’t trust our officers with their guns…Shooting in self defense or when absolutely necessary I can fully support. Slaughtering a NAKED MAN? They better get more than a stupid slap on the wrist

Posted this to the Editor in Chief of the National Post of Canada, regarding this post.

I am astounded and dismayed to read such a false post on your paper. Was it slow for subscriptions? Did you need to post something sensational to boost sales? What reason could you possibly have to allow such an unfounded story to be posted? Why on this green earth would you want to have tensions between America and Canada escalated? What possibly possessed your writer to post something that is so completely NOT based in fact?

My family is from the South. Not just “the” South but the DEEP SOUTH. My family is in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. You can’t get much more Southern than my family is…and I can guarantee you, Dear Sir, this is NOT a valid article. The comments in it are nothing but pure sensationalistic journalism and it is a DISGRACE to you and your publication that you allowed such a slanderous and unfounded article to be posted.

Admittedly, this could be a yellow rag for all I know – but that post put my back up like you would not believe.
