Standing Up for Those Who Cannot

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

So, some of you knew Mike (my husband) was being talked to by the New Yorker. The article, “Invisible Army” by Sarah Stillman, came out this month. It had been edited down significantly and Mike only got a passing mention. She felt that his part of the story needed some further attention and so got her editors to approve a full piece on him in her New Yorker blog. She still wasn’t given enough space to cover the whole thing and has strongly encouraged Mike to write a book about his time in Iraq.

Considering many who have met him and heard the tales have requested the same thing, I was very happy to see him take the suggestion of a professional writer to heart. Here’s hoping he gets the book completed. I believe it will be a compelling read. As you can see in the article, there is much to be told. I’m so glad these things are being forced into the light of day and that my husband was one of the few that, despite the risks to themselves, stood up for those who desperately needed it.

To tell me that the world today is not way too focused on things.

The employee was “stepped on by hundreds of people” as other workers attempted to fight their way through the crowd, Fleming said.

A freaking greeter at Wal-Mart TRAMPLED TO DEATH. Two others shooting it out in front of a TOY STORE. Forget it people. Just – what the hell possessed these people? Certainly not one iota of intelligence nor compassion. And the most disgusting thing about it is – the people who killed this guy will most likely get away with it.

I have always felt this time of year was way too commercialized and…now…I can barely control my feeling of absolute loathing for the American populace.

Hurricane Ike

Friday, September 12th, 2008

For those of you who have voiced concerns for me and mine – worry not.  Jaz is staying here with me until the hurricane passes.  And – for those of you who have the crazy idea that there might be some issues in Austin…let me assure you – Austin is one of the best places to live for more than just the socio-cultural reasons.  The photo is what you see when you look out my office window, right now.

Even over the weekend, the highest sustained winds we can expect are around 35mph with only about 2″ of rain expected.  The gusts will hit, maybe, 45mph.

In other words, Ike is a complete non-issue for Austin.

For those who are having to head into/stay in the area that is going to be seriously impacted by Ike – we will keep you in our prayers and thoughts.  Stay as safe as you possibly can.
