Friends returning

Friday, September 26th, 2008

It’s been great.  In the last 24 hours, two friends that I’ve not talked to for over a year have contacted me.  I’m in seventh heaven right now. Especially with the last one – Debbie.  She and I used to meet every Sunday at Kerby Lane and chatter and natter and prattle on to each other for hours.  Not to mention all the phone calls and emails…I’ve just really, really missed her.  She was my best friend and now that she’s back in the land of the living, I hope to get to re-establish those connections.  She’s just an absolute delight to be around.

She has a few hours tonight, so she is going to try and swing by Graham’s and meet up with me and Wayne.  She wants to meet him and spend some time with me, so it will be really nice.  Besides, it gets her out of the house!  I’m bouncing off the walls happy.

In other news, I started back up on the sock and decided to just knit cuff down to toe and do a pure afterthought heel.  We’ll see how it works…if it works.  I really, really love how this yarn is working up.  The shading in the yarn is making a really delightful mottled effect on the sock and I am completely enamored with it. I mean, tell me that doesn’t just scream “fall leaves” to you.

Oh..and as for how it looks as a sock, so far…here you go:

Edit: Make that THREE friends. *bounces* What a wonderful day. Not only did the third contact me; but, they have moved here from Denver. What an amazing bit of news!!

Rattling and chattering update

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Well, because I was horrified at how many family members I was going to meet last Saturday, I started on a seed-stitch rib sock in a really nice copper Koigu.  I am an absolutely horrid person and haven’t taken photos, yet – but, the play of the shades against each other is just perfect for a “fall” sock.  And having something I could pull out of my purse and fiddle with helped soothe my nerves.  Let’s put it this way…there were enough family members there that THREE of them were celebrating their birthdays (75, 56 and 40) and there were SIXTEEN birthday cakes.  I was a gibbering mess in the corner, fiddling with my sticks and hoping no one would talk to me.  Of course, by the time we left, I had my own, personal cadre of chatterers over in the corner with me – all talking about knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, etc.  One of them may even show up to the Knit Out.  She’s been crocheting for years; but, never learned to knit and she’s interested :-)

Kate – my best friend – also dumped some yarn on me on Sunday and begged me to make her a hat and wrist warmers for her ride in to work.  The crazy woman rides her bike year round to work.  Every day.  She’s certifiable, in my opinion.  But to each their own, eh?  Told her if she got me a bit more, I could make her matching leg warmers too.  Might as well go all out, eh?  I’ll be doing it in the Harald cable pattern from the book Viking Knits.  And, I think I’ll modify it a bit to put on removable ear flaps for her.

I’m still working on the seed-stitch block afghan – it’s coming along; but it’s one of those “in between” projects.  So I don’t really devote a whole lot of focussed time on it.  Especially as it’s getting larger.

The crochet along afghan is moving right along.  I have one more of “my” blocks to make.  My son pouted that he hadn’t been invited to join in – so I gave him a hook and away he went.  Didn’t do too bad a job either!  Especially for someone who’s turned his nose up at crocheting for the last 10 years (he used to crochet with me all the time when he was younger).  So now the family block afghan will have blocks from all the grandkids, myself, my sister and my mother.  Yay!  This just makes me happy in a ridiculously big way.

Hurricane Ike

Friday, September 12th, 2008

For those of you who have voiced concerns for me and mine – worry not.  Jaz is staying here with me until the hurricane passes.  And – for those of you who have the crazy idea that there might be some issues in Austin…let me assure you – Austin is one of the best places to live for more than just the socio-cultural reasons.  The photo is what you see when you look out my office window, right now.

Even over the weekend, the highest sustained winds we can expect are around 35mph with only about 2″ of rain expected.  The gusts will hit, maybe, 45mph.

In other words, Ike is a complete non-issue for Austin.

For those who are having to head into/stay in the area that is going to be seriously impacted by Ike – we will keep you in our prayers and thoughts.  Stay as safe as you possibly can.
