Flax roving & Late night shenannigans

Friday, February 10th, 2006

I have 7 pounds of flax roving and I just don’t have the time right now to perfect the technique of spinning flax. It’s giving me fits and I’d like to get it spun up in a DK weight type yarn. I’m more than willing to give up to 3 pounds of the fiber to the vict…err….kind soul who would be willing to do this, as well as some monetary compensation if desired. I’m not sure where to reach out for such a thing, and was curious if any of you had any suggestions?

I’d actually like to see it blended with the alpaca I have on hand, but I’m not sure that would work too well. What would be even more delightful would be to blend the linen with silk, but I don’t have any silk roving of sufficient quantity to do so. So, 100% linen it is. And…well….the custom wheel I have is just not working for spinning it up….and 7 pounds on a drop spindle….I suppose I could do it that way. **ponders**

Anyway, any suggestions would be delightful.

As for yarn…I decided to destash last night. All my de-stash is going to my mom. All 20 pounds of it. **grimace** I horde yarn. I decided with all that open space in my yarn closets (I should post a picture of them) that I could put all those balls/skeins of yarn squirreled away throughout the house into the stash closets….Think again. I had no idea I had that much yarn squirreled around the house.

clover patternWhat do I do at night when I’m hypo-manic and can’t sleep? Glad you asked…I came up with this for my next set of socks, I believe. I’m thinking more like copper and black for the colors. Black background and copper pattern. It’s a 28 stitch/row repeat. Working on size 3 needles with Koigu, this should work out about right. If not, then I will do some minor modifications to get it to 60 stitches instead of 56. Front and back of the sock and the top of the foot having the pattern on the and the instep being stripes. The heel black and the toe either black or copper.

And, Zib: You are most welcome. I adore Eunny’s pattern, and I’m glad my posting it put it where someone else saw it and found it wonderful as well.

Knitting Patterns

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

So…I’ve noticed that there are several really well done designs that are being rejected by the paper magazines that should really be accepted. Wonderful designs. Not the crap designs that I look at and wonder what drugs they were doing when they were designed. And, I mean classic patterns that last through the years when I say wonderful. Patterns like:

The Deep V Argyle Vest from Eunny

and

The Alishar pattern by Elizabeth Morrison

It boggles the mind that IK and Vogue Knitting can’t be bothered with patterns like this, yet they are the ones that classic knitters want. Patterns that are worth making because they aren’t going to be in the rubbish bin within a year (or less) of completion. As opposed to the patterns that make blogs like “You Knit What?!?” so very prolific.

Yarn Shortage

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Well, I had every intention of swatching…and I know many of my SFCKAL pals will probably cringe in terror when I say what I’m about to say….

I am not swatching. Why?!? Well. Glad you asked. I’m terrified I’m not going to have enough yarn as it is. Seriously terrified. The one ounce skiens I think will be fine. It’s those 25g balls that are freaking me out. I have never found a time when my gauge has not been spot on with the instructions when I’m using the yarn specified, though there is always a first time, I’m sure. I’m also not making this vest for anyone in particular, so size is pretty much moot. I’m doing this as an excercise in colourwork. If it fits me when it’s done, great. I might actually wear it from time to time. If it doesn’t, no loss.

I’m not doing the I-cords, either. Well, I don’t plan on doing the I-cords. I’ve never done them in my life and don’t know that I want to do them now. I suppose I can’t say for certain until I get to that point of the pattern. Most likely, though, I will do a sc ss crocheted border in the colors specified, instead. And, I hate buttons on vests, so no buttons…

I suppose I should just order another ball each of the three colors I’m concerned about and return them if I wind up not needing them…but I’m really, really tight on funds. Three balls….might not actually be that much money. Actually, I’m going to go as far as I can with what I have and if I run out, then I suppose I’ll have to order more. *grimace* Not the way I’d prefer to do it, but it’s the best choice, financially, that I can make.
